Just read the most creepy email. It was one of those warning chain ones which are pretty much urban myths...but anyway...it said that if you are a woman home alone and you hear a baby crying outside don't go and investigate because there is some rapist/serial killer who has recorded the sound and uses it to lure women out of their homes so he can attack them. For some reason this really makes my skin crawl, I think it is the use of the baby. The idea of the innocent being used for evil is one of those conventions that has been employed many times in fiction and film to really unsettle the reader/viewer. This is certainly the case in movies like The Village of the Damned or even Henry James' The Turn of the Screw. It is not just the juxtaposition of evil on innocent, or ancient on youth, but also the kind of unknowableness of children, their inability to communicate makes them an unmeasured quantity which is scary. This combined with the fact that they are far less bound by social convention than adults means they could do literally anything. Actually children really freak me out, not just the posessed ones.
Anyway getting back to the rapist guy, I figure I should worry less, if I ever do get raped or attacked it is much more likely to be by someone I know and have invited in.
