So, I'm a bit wary of entering the fray but I have to admit I like Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. However that aside, Channel Ten have taken the whole concept well beyond the bounds of decency. Earlier tonight they screened the Q Test to find out 'How Queer are you?' Now I will preface this by saying I did't watch it, I was at work, so maybe it was less offensive than it sounds, but really! The mainstream cannot label gay culture 'queer' as an insult and then reappropriate it for commercial gain. A Network Ten exec says they'll be "looking for balance and, first and foremost, I really have to say we're not wanting to perpetuate stereotypes. We want to be entertaining, but we also don't want to be offensive." Noooo, there is no stereotyping going on when your 'queerness' can be calculated on a quiz run by a TV network.
Hmmph! How queer are you? indeed!
