Another article that caught my eye was "Carr hits police on rape case". NSW Premier Bob Carr has condemned police statements regarding the investigation of six NRL players in relation to the gang rape on the Gold Coast in February. Detective Chief Inspector Jason Breton had stated that physical evidence indicated the woman was raped, but because of holes in the case the players could not be charged. Apparently this type of statement will discourage women from reporting incidences of sexual assault because they will lose confidence in the police's ability to act. Of course women will not be tipped off by the actual lack of convictions, just that the media were alerted to the fact that there should have been. Carr is clearly thinking about how "immensely trying and hurtful to the victim" it would be to know that the bastards got away with it, and not about the reputation of the players involved.
