I know Guy and Elanor have already both dealt with this but seriously sometimes you just have to yell CUNT!
A couple of points: First of all I take exception to the statement that "benefits and advantages of traditional marriage... are matters of hard fact." The there is a distinct lack of "hard fact[s]" or evidence (statistical or otherwise) anywhere in Pell's opinion piece. Maybe in the church when you state something it becomes fact sweetie, but in the real world we don't set so much store in faith.
Also who exactly is marriage benefitting? If we want to get all statistical we can see how much it benefits men to have an unpaid helpmate to look after their children, clean their houses, provide emotional support and sexual gratification. Looking at it like that who wouldn't want someone to do all the shit bits of their life? However, as men constitute slightly less than half of the community perhaps it would better to look at the whole picture.
However, if marriage is the great institution that Pell thinks it is then why deny it to anyone? Homo/Heterosexual relationships are not a zero-sum power game, I presume they can print a few more marriage licenses without too much drain on our resources, there is no finite amount of marriedness to go around.
Basically Howard and Pell and whoever else is out there should stop pissing around mouthing "family values" etc. and just come out with "we are homophobic cunts and there is no way we are ever going to let them fags have equal rights to the rest of society."
